Cpl. Lai Ly, a Squad Automatic Weapon machine gunner with Battery E, 2nd Battalion, 12th Marines, patrols through a section of Tree Line Black, Aug. 12. This tree line was heavily laced with improvised explosive devices and was used as concealment for insurgent fighting positions before Marines began systematically clearing sections with explosives. Battery E is an artillery unit by trade and performs a provisional infantry role while guarding the critical infrastructure of the Kajaki Dam.
